I won this from the wonderful Beauty Info Zone's Grapevine review challenge. I never win anything and while it was awesome, I had no idea Rock and Republic (R&R) were even doing makeup now. I know the brand for it's high end jeans but this seems to be a trend for more well-known high end brands to have a beauty/cosmetic/fragrance lines, like Juicy Couture Perfume. This is a felt tip liner or more generally, a marker you can use as eyeliner which retails for $28 dollars but is currently sold out on the R&R website. I am a big fan of marker liners so I was thrilled when this showed up!
The packaging is pretty involved. It came in what looks like a watch box, heavy cardboard in black with a deep purple reflective foil with the logo. This could be hard to see if you are slightly blind, the way I am. The pen, as I will call this liner, is matte black but smooth with the logo in slightly raised shine-y layers (looks like the matte and shine manicures using black matte polish). The tip of the liner is long and thick, like a brush tipped art marker but not flexible.
The marker eyeliner is pretty standard and it's hard to differentiate anything but subtle differences between the formulas. R&R claims this is water resistant, long-wearing, smudge proof, with easy application. The finis of this is definitely black with a leathery sheen. I swatched it on my hand so you could see the different thicknesses you could achieve by using this at different angles. I have no complaints about the wear, it wears all day for me 8+ hours and the the larger felt tip is easier to handle. I like the sheen but it doesn't translate much on the eye but you can certainly notice it on a hand swatch. I like the packaging, it's like a sleeker design of a MAC Penultimate liner. I prefer the larger brush tip of this liner to the very slim one of the Penultimate. The drugstore comparison would be the CoverGirl Line Exact. Line Exact fades on me and the pen seems to dry out fairly quickly but I think it's good for the price. The tip of the CGLE is the same as the R&R but smaller in scale. I do like how small the CGLE is and I like it best in the color grey, not black.
All in all, I think this is a good splurge item but not a must have. It doesn't do anything you can't do with a gel liner except give you a very easy application (although if you have the right brush with a gel liner, you can get a similarly easy application but add more steps.)I have been wearing this consistently and love to use it on the lower last line because you get get such a thin line with it.
